NASCAR Limited Sportsman Cars To Make Martinsville Debut

For the first time in more than a decade, Martinsville Speedway is reviving its historic doubleheader race day format but with a brand new twist.

The NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour, long a staple of Martinsville’s famous doubleheaders, will lead the lineup for the Made In America Whelen 300 on September 27, but for the first time, NASCAR’s Limited Sportsman Division will be part of the race-day schedule.

The speedway is adding a 50-lap race for the Limited Sportsman Division to its Made In America Whelen 300 NASCAR Modified schedule on Sunday, September 27. It will be run immediately after the 200-lap NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour race and will pay $2,500 to win.

“The Limited Sportsman drivers put on great shows every weekend at weekly tracks and this is an opportunity for them to display their skills on a large stage,” said Martinsville Speedway president Clay Campbell. “We think the Limited Division race will be quite an addition for race fans on the Made In America 300 weekend.”

The top 26 positions for the 50-lap feature will be determined in time trials on Saturday, September 26. The final 10 positions will be filled through two, 25-lap heat races, which will be run at 12:30 p.m. on Sunday, September 27.

The Limited Sportsman Division has long been an important element of weekly racing, serving as many tracks’ second feature division behind Late Model Stock Cars. They are very similar to Late Model Stock Cars, with a less powerful engine being the biggest difference.

The inaugural Martinsville Limited Sportsman race will be run in accordance to rules presented in the 2009 NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Late Model Stock Car Division rules with one exception: crate-type engines will be allowed along with open-built engines.

All cars must maintain a minimum weight of 3,200 ponds with a minimum right side weight of 1,425 pounds. (More information can be found on Martinsville Speedway’s website, www.martinsvillespeedway.com)

All drivers must have a valid NASCAR Charger (or above) driver’s license.

The NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour cars will take the green flag for a 200-lap race at 1:30 on September 27 with the 50-lap Limited Sportsman race following immediately.

Tickets for the Made In America Whelen 300 are $25 for adults. Children 12 and under will be admitted free. Tickets may be purchased by calling 877.RACE.TIX or by visiting www.martinsvillespeedway.com on line.
